With an office in the heart of Toronto's start-up scene, tech-company Blue J Legal works with clients across North America that include tax and employment law firms, accounting firms and HR professionals.
Blue J Legal is best-known for their AI software solutions that allow their clients to compare cases with hundreds, if not thousands, of similar real-world cases to predict their likely outcome in court within a 90-to-95 per cent degree of accuracy.
Ready Set Go met with Blue J Legal in mid 2019 for a full-day workshop. The goal was to wrap the AI-based predictive technology in an intuitive user experience to increase client sales and retention.
During the session, Ready Set Go shared various sketched workflows (a process by which a design project moves from initiation to completion) that the Blue J team had created during the session and, together, arrived at how Blue J could transform their UX into a more engaging product experience.
First, Ready Set Go designed the product’s prototype and rigorously tested its features during several one hour UX interviews with individual users over two weeks. The goal was to identify which of the prototype's features users engaged with easily, and others they struggled with.
Armed with hands-on human intel, RSG began working on the software platform’s user experience.
RSG built a design system for Blue J with a specific set of components to effectively support the platform’s development at scale from the outset. Starting with basic items, such as colours, colour values, typography and type sizes, the system quickly progressed towards more advanced design features. These features included pattern templates the Blue J team could use across the product’s design. Ultimately, the collaboration between Blue J and RSG resulted in a meticulous approach to a simple, predictable experience with end users better understanding how to navigate each product feature with relative ease.
"After shopping around multiple design shops, we decided to engage RSG back in 2019 for our first major UX overhaul", said Blue J Legal's CTO Brett Janssen. "We couldn't be happier with the results and our continued relationship with RSG is proof of that."
Blue J Legal client usage ranks much higher now when measuring their new design's relative impact; in particular, ‘compute count,’ which means the number of times clients successfully run predictions using Blue J Legal’s software. When the data came in, they saw their client’s average compute count climb 2x higher than their previous UX design, which was the proof-point Blue J needed to justify ongoing UX support from RSG.
“The typical standard measure for optimism when integrating a user experience solution for a client is ‘we think people are going to do this,’ which is due to a lack of proper user testing from the outset,” says Ready Set Go Founder, Dayton Pereira. “With our approach that integrates deep user testing from the start, we know with great certainty what the end-user will do.”
